Subject Description

    Archaeology is an innately practical discipline and this subject provides an opportunity for undergraduate students understand the relationship between practical work and academic research questions. The Archaeology in Practice subject requires students to join ongoing research projects - whether field or laboratory-based - where they will gain practical experience and be asked to consider issues such as: the theoretical approaches behind the practice; the valued and significance of the sites or artefacts to stakeholders; ethical issues; specific fieldwork or laboratory approaches, techniques and constraints. The subject will involve additional costs to cover fieldwork or laboratory expenses.

Learning Outcomes

  • develop an appreciation of the relationship between practice and theory in archaeology
  • develop an awareness of ethical and practical issues that must be addressed when working with archaeological sites, artefacts or other related materials
  • practice and demonstrate practical skills specific to the project

Subject Assessment

  • Written > Project report - (40%) - Individual
  • 10% Journal (individual), 20% Reflection/reflective task (mixed, Individual & Group - (30%) - Group & Individual
  • Performance/Practice/Product > Practical assessment/practical skills demonstration - (30%) - Group & Individual

Assumed Knowledge:  To undertake this subject, students must have successfully completed 12 credit points (four subjects) of level 1 study at tertiary level
